DIY Citrus Cleaner: Turn Kitchen Scraps into a Non-Toxic Powerhouse!

Don’t just toss those lemon and orange peels into the compost or trash! Here at WiseHomist, we’re all about finding smart, sustainable ways to run our homes. What if you could turn that “trash” into your new favorite cleaning product?

This is a perfect, low-cost way to keep your home smelling fresh and looking sparkling clean, even during the dusty seasons.

We all know white vinegar is a cleaning champion, but let’s be honest: the smell isn’t exactly luxurious. By infusing it with citrus peels, you do two wonderful things:

  1. You neutralize that sharp vinegar scent and replace it with a fresh, bright citrus aroma.
  2. You boost its cleaning power. Citrus peels contain D-limonene, a natural oil that is a fantastic degreaser and solvent.

This non-toxic, all-purpose cleaner is perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, and it’s a project you can feel great about. Let’s make it!

What You’ll Need:

  • Citrus Peels: Leftover peels from lemons, oranges, limes, or grapefruit.
  • White Distilled Vinegar: The standard, inexpensive kind works perfectly.
  • A Large Glass Jar with a Lid: An upcycled pasta sauce or pickle jar is ideal.
  • A Sieve/Strainer
  • A Spray Bottle: For the finished product.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Collect Your Peels

As you eat oranges or use lemons in your recipes, save the peels. You can keep collecting them in your jar in the fridge for a few days until it’s full.

Step 2: Pack the Jar & Add Vinegar

Stuff your glass jar full of the citrus peels. Really pack them in there! Once the jar is full, pour the white vinegar over the peels, making sure they are all completely submerged. This is important to prevent any mold from forming.

Step 3: Infuse! (The “Waiting” Part)

Seal the jar tightly and give it a good shake. Place it in a cool, dark place (like a kitchen cabinet) and let it infuse for 1 to 2 weeks. Give it a shake every few days. The longer it sits, the stronger the citrus scent will be. You’ll see the vinegar start to turn a beautiful, deep yellow/orange color as it extracts the oils.

Step 4: Strain, Dilute, and Use!

After two weeks, your infusion is ready! Place a sieve over a bowl and strain out the liquid. You can compost the leftover peels.

Now, dilute your infused vinegar 1:1 with water. (For example, one cup of citrus vinegar to one cup of water). This is the perfect strength for an all-purpose cleaner. Pour this diluted mixture into your spray bottle, and you’re ready to clean!

It’s fantastic for:

  • Kitchen counters and stovetops (cuts grease!)
  • Sinks and faucets (shines them beautifully)
  • Windows and mirrors (for a streak-free shine)
  • Sticky spots on the floor
  • Cleaning the inside of your fridge

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: This is an acidic cleaner! DO NOT use this (or any vinegar-based cleaner) on natural stone surfaces like marble or granite. The acid can etch and permanently damage the stone. Stick to pH-neutral cleaners or simple soap and water for those surfaces.
